Born in Houston, James Lee Burke grew up on the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast. He finished his first novel, Half of Paradise, when he was twenty-three. The Robicheaux series has been translated into almost every language in the world. Over the years he has taught at four universities, been a case worker in California, pipeliner in Texas, a landman for Sinclair Oil Company in Louisiana, and surveyor in Colorado, to name a few of the jobs in his past. He and his wife, Pearl, live on their ranch in western Montana. His latest novel is Flags on the Bayou, taking place in the Civil War era.
